Wardrobe Wednesday - Why I'll Never Be a Fashion Blogger

But I would like to be considered a style blogger. :o)

I love clothes and I love dressing up but I am not fashionable. I couldn't tell you what the latest trends are and I certainly won't give them my affections unless I think they deserve them.

There are a lot of things I won't wear, particularly types of fabric or certain prints. There are some styles (by which I mean the general description like boho, preppy, 50s...) that you won't see me in either.

So I'm not a follower of fashion. But I do believe in personal style. I like to dress with a sense of fun, I care about how I look, I think about how I dress. I'm just not really worried whether a certain silhouette is in or out and whether the print I choose is right on trend.

Mainly I want to be unique in my approach. I want my clothes to say something about the person I am and I want them to be an extension of my own creative engagement with the world.

Recently I watched Bill Cunningham's New York and I loved that he was the same. It wasn't about what or who was in it was about beautiful outfits that caught his eye.

How about you - are you a fashion follower?
Do you like to play around with new trends and integrate them into your wardrobe?
Are there things you will not wear even if they are in fashion or are you a bit flexible?
Do you want to stand out or blend in?
And what is your take on the word style versus the word fashionable

I'd love to know :o)

Outfit:
Pants - Classic Clothing
Shirt - Op Shop - made over
Shoes - the yellow ones I wore last week Andrea Biani
Bracelet - one of my grandmother's
Ring - measurement tape in silver - gift

So what is Wardrobe Wednesday?
  • It's a chance to take some time once a week to peel off the polar fleece trackies (I have a pair too!!) and put on something that gives you a chance to have a 'play' in your wardrobe, to make yourself feel pretty/ stylish/ like a woman or at least not slummy!
  •  It's a time to celebrate and hopefully to embrace your body however you find it - post baby, young or old your body is lovely and functional and precious and I want this place to be a place for you to see other women (ordinary, beautiful women) who don't live in designer homes on designer budgets with designer bodies.
How to play?
1. Link in your specific blog post not just your general blog
2. Link to a post about clothes - that's what we're here for
3. Please add a link back here so other people can come over and see people's clothing posts too - the old fashioned way or grab a button
4. Be encouraging and visit people - leave a comment now and again too everyone loves to get encouragement

Here's the button copy and paste away

I really do like that colour and style on you and those trousers look awesome.

I'm not a follower of fashion either.... mainly because I don't have the money for it! I have expensive taste! LOL

Miriam,

With that being said, then you are a fashion blogger, lol!

Always love your introspective questions! I definitely agree with you that I am more interested in personal style and discovering one's own journey along that path. But along this past, first year of style blogging, I would say I am more open now to trends than ever before. But not because of peer pressure. Because it's fun sometimes to stretch myself and see how I can interpret "trends" into my own style. Like trying out the mint color trend via nail polish, or discovering how I can make skinny jeans work for my curvy bottom half. I feel way more confident now in my own style than I did even a year ago. And style ain't nothing but a confident attitude! :)

I'm exactly the same with fashion which is why I started up My Style Sunday . I love seeing everyone's personal style.

Love your outfit :). Not a follower of fashion, i know what suits me and what i feel comfortable in. If you feel comfortable and you're wearing something that flatters you and makes you feel good, i believe you'll look more in trend than fashionistas struggling to make it work :)

I'm not fashionable but I think I'm stylish. And I do have a lot of fun with my clothes.

Some things I see fashion bloggers wear and I think it's cute but so impractical for every day. Hello, Stilettos? So I guess I'm not a fashion blogger either.

I think it's just fine not to follow the trends. Fashion is really whatever we each make of it. I love your 50's vibe.

Hi:) I like to wear what I feel confident in and that changes from day to day! If I love a trend, I'm not against integrating it into my wardrobe-but with my own spin on it! I'm also big on dressing for my body type and playing with what looks best on my frame because then I feel the most confident! For example I have a super long torso so I always have to make sure my top half is proportionate to the bottom or everything 'feels' off ;) thanks for hosting the link party!!

I definately follow trends. That doesn't mean I wear all of them, however I do try to incorporate a sense of them or my take on them in order to stay current.

I do like fashion - to an extent. I don't always follow it, usually im behind! I usually hate a trend until its died out and then I jump aboard. LOL But Ive always been told (by people around me) that Im fashionable, and always dress nice look cute and pull outfits together so well. That just came from a desire to want to look good and dress my (before the weight loss) overweight body well and in a flattering way!
People who know me have always referred to me as the "fashionista" before I even really thought about or blogged about it.

I personally think you dont have to follow the latest trend to be stylish and fashionable. Find what works for you and your body type and rock it! If you look good in it, you are stylish, latest fashion trend or not! :)

I love this post! I definitely think I stick with trends when it comes to cut and fit of clothes (for example, skinny jeans and looser tops), but most of the time I feel silly wearing certain trendy things. For example, I cannot wear leopard (for most people that is a staple!), sequins or sweaters with animals on them. I just feel like those things aren't "me." In my opinion, it is good to know what makes you feel happy and comfortable and stick with those things!

I think there is a difference between being into "fashion" and being into "trends" and I would say for the most part, I am not into trends, unless I really like it. I'm not going to wear something just because it is "in" if I'm not comfortable in it. Does that make sense?

As for personal style, I usually prefer to blend in. I'm into preppy and/or classic styles for the most part. But I did just buy a sequin dress that I'm having lots of fun styling and is completely out of character for me!

To me, a fashion blogger is someone who is wearing this designer's dress with that designer's shoes, and who gives a running commentary on what they thought of so-and-so's Spring collection, etc. I am a personal style blogger. I work with what I got, acknowledge and participate in certain trends and say no thank you to those that don't suit my body or my values. As much fun as being a fashion blogger would be, I like to think style blogging takes far more creativity and hutzpah. I am called upon to be innovative and gutsy every time I put together an outfit because there is no design label for me to flaunt and hide behind. You have got me on my soapbox now, Miriam! ;) ~Sarah

I love what you wrote in this post. I never used to be on top of fashion and I never knew what trends were in style. But in reading so many style and fashion blogs, I now can't help but know what's hot for the season :) However, that's not to say that I'm a slave to all fashion trends. I tend to pick and choose the ones that look interesting to me. But I certainly don't consider myself a fashionista. I just wear what I think looks good for me, and I'm totally happy with that.

These two quote sum up my thoughts on style vs. fashion pretty well:

“Fashion is what you’re offered four times a year by designers. And style is what you choose.” —Lauren Hutton

"Style is very personal. It has nothing to do with fashion. Fashion is over quickly. Style is forever." - Ralph Lauren

I basically like what I like, regardless of whether it's currently a trend or not. And I will try out some new trends, if it's something I haven't tried before and think I might like. But there are some things I just won't wear, trend or not.

I really love your approach to style. I think that your personality is reflected in what you wear, and I know it would be fun to hang out with you! Thanks for hosting the link up!

I used to be very much a slave to fashion, a head-to-toe-Glasson-ite, nowadays, not so much. Now I know what I like and I just pull a few things out of the current trends (if that makes sense!!)

I'd like to think that I come off as 'effortlessly cool'!

I'm obsessed with the Bill Cunningham documentary - it was amazing and so is he! I loved that it was about the clothes/fashion itself rather than the celebs/socialites. So perfect!
