Why?

Today's question for pondering - why is it impossible to keep a full deck of cards?

and why did I just find the 5 of spades under a pile of dirty socks (ahem) in my room?

These are the big questions that challenge my mind.

Do You Ever Think About...

how we hold super fit, muscly people up as if their example is something we should all aspire to

...and yet

we don't seem to do the same with people who have amazing character?

yes, fitness comes with hard work

but I think character requires much more difficult work, more tears, more opening up to hidden places and disappointments, more peeling back layers of hurt and forgiving ourselves and others,

more realising that we aren't there yet
more grace given to others that aren't there either
more self-denial than avoiding a second serving
more grit and determination than press-ups and sprints.

Is it because we can't 'see' character? or

Is it because we place more value on what we see?

I'd like to be fit and muscly but I'd like to have character more. Somehow I think character will see me healthy through more years than muscles. But there are days when I care more about the outward and less about the inward.

Do you find that too?

My values say character is more important but my behaviour and thoughts don't always reflect that.

If I asked myself what I am doing to build a healthy fit body I could answer that in an instant.

If I asked myself what I am doing to build enduring character that would take so much more thought. I wish that weren't true but it is.

What do you do to build an inspiring, buff character?

love you more than stopping to ask myself hard questions xxx

On Being Accidentally Nonchalant

So it's Friday and The Atlas managed to get an afternoon off and we went to the central markets for lunch - with everyone else in Adelaide.

So the tables are scarce

and there is a man sitting eating on his own with 4 empty chairs around him

and The Atlas is suggesting we just go out and sit on a bench somewhere together but I want a table

so I wander over to the man and smile politely

'would you mind if we join you at your table?'

'not at all he smiles, I'm almost finished'

'oh don't let us scare you off,' I laugh. we all sit down around him and smile politely, saying our thank yous.

He makes a cute comment to Bounce about the size of his hot dog, finishes his mouthful and leaves. We thank him again and get on with the mess of consuming hotdogs.

Another market eater comes up and asks us how we knew that man.... we didn't we say, we just asked to share his table. The man gushes that was actually Charles Dance - although he could only remember his GoT name - Tywin Lannister (I think he was working up courage to go over and say hi, ask for an autograph, photo.... when we joined him and he thought we must have been family!).

Turns out friendly, polite man is also Game of Thrones actor Charles Dance and in Adelaide for the filming of Gallipoli.

So we were totally nonchalant and barged in on his table. Oops. You know us kiwis quite happy to share a table with anyone. If we were more hip and up with pop culture we might have known that ourselves - ahh well you can't win them all!

In Which I Rant on Behalf of my Boys

Usually I try to understand that everyone has their own story - their battles alter their perspective of the world - and then sometimes I just think 'oh no you didn't'

So I saw this comment below a pin the other day:

Ladies, if a guy is really good at telling you things that make you feel like Kate Middleton, just know: he did not practice those lines on his sister.

I thought - seriously?? I mean how does a guy win these days? How do my boys get to grow up and met the impossible, judgmental criteria set up by this kind of attitude?

So I'm gonna break it down right here - the reason this comment makes me a little tetchy,

1. Um... isn't making you feel glamorous, princess-ish, maybe even unattainable, out-of-my-league-ish kind of a nice thing. It's not like he's making you feel like a slab of roast at the local markets. ??? Presumably a 'kate middleton' compliment isn't sleazy, cheapening you or demeaning? I mean she is a powerful, intelligent, beautiful, recognisable person - or am I missing something?

2. If you get aggro with a man for paying you a compliment are you not going to be the same woman complaining on social media that he doesn't appreciate you, make you feel beautiful, admire you, tell you he loves you.....??? if a guy can't give you a compliment in the early days for fear you'll think he's a perv he's certainly not going to magically start once you know he isn't.

3. Lord help me I certainly hope The Atlas didn't practice telling his sisters how much they spun his wheels - um... incest?? I don't think you should be practicing those kinds of 'kate middleton' compliments on family members.... weirdness.

Perhaps one day when my boys crack out a cheesy, sweet, compliment and they get asked who else they've said that to..they might respond with 'no-one, it's something my dad used to say to my mum and I feel about you the way he did about her.'

My point in this rant is this - girls.... please can we cut a guy some slack? It takes courage to offer a sweet and genuine (non sleazy) compliment and even if you aren't interested in him you can at least respond with a little grace and not assume he's a stalker, perv or other.

I like compliments, I believe in compliments and I want to raise boys who can give others genuine praise and admiration without being treated like they are 'grubby boys with a one track mind'. Let's treat everyone with a bit more dignity than that. Girls and boys - let's pay compliments both ways.

so.... rant off my chest .... that feels better.

love you more than a brave compliment tenderly given and received xxx

Masterchef - The True Invention Test

Okay competitors today we have the most challenging invention test ever in the history of masterchef.

The rules are simple.

You will find yourself in the kitchen of the middle of the road mama with school (and possibly pre-school aged children) the day before shopping day. Your job is to make a family meal that will suit offspring, 2-3 of various ages and 1-2 adults.

You will have half an hour to complete the meal. Your time starts at 4.30pm exactly and your meal must be served by 5pm. If you miss this deadline several of the judges may refuse to eat and throw a tantrum, and your food. One of the key judges, and only people likely to appreciate your meal, may arrive after this time - half an hour to an hour later in fact - so you better hope your meal tastes good lukewarm, cold or sadly reheated in a microwave.

You will have full access to a partially stoked cupboard and fridge/freezer. Don't forget to use the veges quietly dying in the bottom draw of the fridge. That slimy thing on the third self is not a squid it is a mixure concocted by the 3 year old and must not be touched for fear of demerit points.

Please dig into the back of the cupboards where you are likely to find some interesting opened packets of ingredients like lentils and quinoa that are probably pass their use-by, as the main cook was going through a short-lived 'natural' stage before they realised no one would eat any of it - by all means though do prove us wrong.

During your half hour cooking time you must also listen to 2 children read very slowly and ask for help on several words. You will have to make them read to you, they will not offer and this is an imperative part of the challenge if you want to move on to the next round. You must provide this task equal concentration to your cooking. Don't forget to sign the homework books as evidence you have done it.

The table must also be cleared of school notices, cereal from the morning's breakfast, playdough and a collection of things that have no special home. After this you must coerce, without violence, one of the children to set the table.

You may use any recipe that you can find in the kitchen provided the book pages aren't so stuck together that you have to tear them apart. It may be more successful just to make it up as you go along, this is an invention test after all.

Presentation will not help. All food must be disintegrated to such a size that it can be eaten with a teaspoon anything crunchy or slimy may cause one judge to gag in such a way that all other judges will no longer want to eat theirs either.

Each judge requires their own plate, although many will eat off each others plates during the tasting too. You may have to do some washing while you are preparing in order to have enough plates to serve up your meal. One judge may refuse to eat their dinner if it is not presented on the correct plate - the correct plate is currently unknown.

If the kitchen is a mess when you have finished don't worry, you have a hour at about 8.30pm to clean that up yourself.

Don't forget to season your meal, however you must not use salt as it is bad for the children, anything spicy as they will refuse to eat it and fresh herbs as they will cause suspicion.

The rules are simple:

  • get the meal done and feed all the judges. Any contestant who manages to do all of the above and have everyone finished what is served to them will receive an immunity pin and be interviewed by woman's weekly for $10,000.
  • any contestant failing to complete this task will be given the same task every night for the next 10-18 years
Good luck your 30 minutes starts NOW!

See this pile of sorted Lego pieces?

See the blue box down there that never seems to have any less in it?

See these destroyed nails from separating pieces that are clinging to each other more tightly than a bargain hunter and the boxing day sales?

This, my friend is what come of inventing great ideas for a Lego Party.

Yes, I am that person. My name is Miriam and I am going to change the world - after I finish separating and sorting lego pieces, have a shower and sort out my manicure and moisturise my hands.

Perhaps???

Perhaps the best ways to achieve lasting change are in the small ideas, offered humbly, done with love.

Somehow I think the making of soap, side by side, with a traditional enemy is rather a powerful thing, more so than grand speeches and political handshaking and special summits that play out on the world stage.

Perhaps side-by-side making is the way forward?

Pyjamas, Random Thought

Why does the crotch always give out on my old-man jammies?

Being A Grown Up Is So Cool

I quite like being a 'grown-up', yes I really do.

Sometimes I think we as grown-ups, ahem!, bemoan how we miss the joys and freedoms of childhood. Certainly I want my boys to enjoy all of it and be little for just as long as they can - but being a grown up is fun too.

This week when Flip turned 7 we filled his door with balloons to collapse in on him when he got up in the morning. I spent the whole time we were putting it together saying to The Atlas - 'this is so fun. Can you imagine how much the boys would love to be able to do this sort of thing?'. and of course they could with adult help and organisation..... but that's the point I'm trying to make

when you are a grown up:

you can plan surprises for other people with no help

you can use fancy ingredients to bake for people, or even just to bake for yourself

you can put a treat in the trolley at the supermarket without having to ask permission and beg and plead, all the while trying not to sound whiny

you can eat a biscuit for breakfast (yeah cos I would never do that....)

you can read WAY past your bedtime and feel tired all the next day without being told off

or you can spend a whole year reading magazines because it's all your over tired brain can handle and no-one harasses you to read 'real' books (or worse gives you an assignment to do on a book you can't stand)

you can call in sick without having to convince your parents you really are sick (and I'm not suggesting sickies here - just pointing out you get to judge your own sickness level)

you can give people presents for no reason

you can wear whatever you please (clearly within the bounds of decency and you really ought not to wear shorts so short your butt cheeks hang out the bottom - just sayin)

you can wear ridiculous jewellery to work and not worry about getting it confiscated or setting fire to it on the bunsen burner (unless of course you are a mechanic, scientist or other such career)

you can paint your nails and no-one is going to tell you to take it off

you can wear a black bra under a white shirt (not that I do, but I could)

you can pick your own underwear and not worry about it showing through your PE shirt

you can even go commando without having to worry people will notice when you hang upside down on the bars (not that I do, of course!!)

you can take photos of whatever you like and take heaps and heaps without having someone tell you to be careful the whole time

you can make a 'playdate' (or whatever grown ups call them) without having to ask a parent and you can stay home without being forced to play with that girl who always says mean things

you can suck your straw and make loud noises in a cafe and no one tells you off

you can run a bubble bath and read a magazine and if you drop it in you can shrug and move on

and your kids don't tell you off if you forget to close the toilet door - in fact they kind of appreciate having to make less effort to break in and tell you something important like they just stuck something to their armpit and it won't come off and you have to help right now! (or is that just us?)

and
and
and

today your challenge is to do something that only grown ups can do, just because you can, and to intentionally enjoy it. Please tell me what you are going to do - 'kay?

Today I'm stoked to be a grown up, because being a grown up has its very good points

Got anything to add to my list?

what's with sponge?

Aside from the fact you can dye your sponge all sorts of colours to make a pretty looking cake....

sponge is a completely disappointing kind of cake

it's like ready salted chips

and the colour beige

what credentials does it bring to the table?

light and fluffy? (read: nothing to it - those calories are real but really are you getting any flavour)

perfect with cream and strawberries - what was wrong with the cream and strawberries that they needed an accompaniment that was like eating something you use to wash your car?

sponge is really like me on a touch team - I add nothing to the game, I bring no skill and when I do actually (miraculously) manage to touch someone it's a slap on the face (true story) and disallowed. The only reason you'd want me on your team is for my side kick The Atlas who is all the things I'm not and will run from the other end of the field to get the touch I missed....

I've tried sponge

I don't like it

you cannot convince me it's any more than a boring beige in the line up of moist, dense, sticky and other wonderful invitations

sponge - my dance card is full - just stay there and blend in with the flowery wallpaper.

The Emperor's New Clothes

Bounce: You've got a hole in your sock

If a 4 year old can't tell it like it is - who can?

Also one of my posts - entitled The Juxtaposition seems to be attracting a lot more traffic than any of my posts warrant.... I wonder why and would I have had so many hits if it was called The Missionary Position???

Ahem, Hello, Hello... Is this thing working??

someone suggested to me recently that I am funnier in real life than in this space. They said it very gently in case of piercing offence through my thin skin rhino-hide.

I wasn't offended

I quite agreed

there are some blogs I read that I literally laugh out loud....mine isn't one of them...(I think you have probably already realised this)

thing is I like an audience (which sounds terribly self-centred and vain - yeah okay, so I can probably only deny that a tiny bit). As an extrovert I get a lot of energy from being in a room full of people and having the floor. It's other people that make me funny - it's not me, it's you.....

as much as I say I think I'm funny (which I really only think from time to time) it does actually surprise me when other people think I am funny because, on the whole, I'm just being myself and I'm not actually trying to be funny (in fact I find the pressure to be funny very scary - so I will not pursue a career in stand up comedy even though Stella asked me to)

although.... I do love to make people laugh, it's not in an 'I'm a comedian and so hilarious' kind of way. I like making people laugh because it's one of my favourite things to do, because I think laughing is really fun and I basically believe that a merry heart is as good for us as medicine (which is a highly para-phrased miriam-esque translation of a bible verse I like a lot). I think laughing is a good start on helping people towards a merry heart.

maybe I'm also afraid to be funny on here in case it doesn't read as funny- in real life I have my voice and face to assist in the delivery - I once said to someone 'For an attractive girl I can make myself look pretty awful' (he didn't know how to respond).

so anyway, what the heck does all this mean for you the reader who has hung on to the end of the post hoping it might go somewhere.... sorry about that

it means I might get more random or I might just stay my straight and steady course or I just might do a post about why I won't wear a matching bra and undies..... hold on folks it could be a weird and unfunny ride

I might lose Earnest (who I identify with a lot) and embrace Random (who I party with a bit).... or I might just play them off against each other until one dumps me.

Anyone else getting feedback in their foldback? (it's a music thing) or are you all feeling at home with your voice?

Help A Mama Out

Since I have changed over from Wordpress some of my special followers who aren't bloggers have had a much harder time commenting.....

during a mini-rant to the lovely Simone she suggested I try intense debate.... in theory then it will remember you every time you come back, and if you add in your blog it should also display any posts you've recently written. Just like with wordpress first time you put in your email and then easy peasy from there on.

So Mum this one is for you.... (and lots of other people too) ..... now you can tell me how awesome I am so much more easily. Provided of course that this whole update worked - yeah otherwise we're both at square one.

If you could spare a couple of seconds to leave a comment then you'd be helping this mama out too.... thanks x

(unrelated photos again..... yeah sorry about that!)
